Introduction to Zagora, Morocco
Historic Zagora is a town in eastern Morocco's Draa River Valley that dates back to the 13th century. Its location enables it to provide a primary base for exploring the surrounding desert and mountain regions for which this North African country is known. The town itself features groves of date palms that flourish on the banks of its oases. Many of the buildings and hotels in Zagora have been constructed of stone, although travellers will find a suite of more contemporary accommodations as well. The Amazraou Oasis lies to the one side of the Draa River Valley and in addition to being a pleasantly cool location for relaxation, is home to a bazaar selling silverware. The twice-weekly market in Zagora is a bustling affair with unique Arabian produce, spices and souvenirs for sale. The two hills on the outskirts of town can be crested with an easy hike and offer panoramic views of the Sahara Desert as reward. Camel safaris come highly recommended and provide visitors with the authentic Bedouin experience complete with overnight accommodation in Berber tents and spectacular morning sunrises.
