The southern Moroccan town of Tiznit was originally established around an ancient marketplace, but has since become fairly modernised. The old Medina district is enclosed by a five kilometre long wall and contains traditional Kasbahs where sabre swords, silver jewellery, Arabian spices and Persian carpets are among the numerous items on offer. In Tresor du Sud, shoppers can watch artisans at work creating silver trinkets. The Tiznit hotels here provide an atmospheric place to rest and range from the beach resorts on the Atlantic coast to those built high up on the Anti Atlas Mountains. Mechouar is the Tiznit Medina's main square and is surrounded by colourful red houses. In the evenings, the square comes alive with snake charmers, entertainers, storytellers and vendors selling juices and local delicacies. The Great Mosque; the memorial at the town's original mineral water spring (Source Bleue); the beach at Mirhleft and the Souss-Massa National Park have all earned their places on visitors' travel itineraries.
