Introduction to Tangier, Morocco
Exotic Tangier has it all - mystery, history, unspoilt beaches, heritage buildings, great views, great shopping and friendly locals. It is a mix of Spain, France and North Africa, unsurprising as the city sits on the northern edge of Morocco, opposite Gibraltar. Easily accessed by plane, ferry or hydrofoil from Europe, the city is a popular stop-off for explorers of North Africa, with plenty to see and do, with its traditional Medina at the top of the list. The Kasbah Museum, formerly a sultan's palace, has artefacts from the Phoenician era to the modern day, and the building itself is spectacular. The souk is best visited Sundays or Thursdays, when the colourfully-dressed Rif mountain women arrive to sell their unique wares, and the vast market at Casa Barata sells literally everything, including fine leatherware, carpets and clothes, as well as the occasional forgery. Eateries in town and along the beachfront serve a plethora of international cuisines as well as Moroccan dishes, with upscale restaurants in Tangier hotels offering fine dining at a price.
