Located on the northern part of Morocco, Tangier occupies a strategic location on the straits between Europe and Africa. During the first part of the 20th century, it was considered a fashionable beach resort attracting the rich and famous as well as adventure-seekers. Grand Socco is the famous square where Mohammed V made a speech about independence for Morocco in 1947. It also features the ornately decorated Sidi Abib Mosque and its beautiful minaret. The square has a significant location as it joins the medina with the new part of the city. There are some good handicrafts available from the markets stalls, especially products from the Riffian Berbers.
