Morocco has been occupied by the Berbers, or Imazighen, for thousands of years. Despite the efforts of the Phoenicians and the Romans, the clans and tribes of the Berber have always fiercely defended their independence. Arab armies gained control over many North African countries by the beginning of the 8th century, and a fundamentalist Berber group was formed in Morocco.
