Introduction to Fez, Morocco
The great medieval walled city of Fez represents a high point of the Islamic civilisation, boasting the Arab world's best-preserved old city, the labyrinthine Fes el-Bali Medina. In the planet's biggest car-free zone, goods transportation is by donkey, carriage or motorbike. The best of all the stunning Islamic architecture in the walled, northern Moroccan city is represented by Bou Inania Madersa, a 14th century madrassa with wooden walls that are exquisitely carved with calligraphy and geometric patterns. The medina itself is crammed with souks containing Berber traditional pharmacies, tanneries with leather dyeing vats, spices, fresh local produce, Berber jewellery and handicrafts. Two ancient fortresses loom over the city, offering spectacular views as well as an arms museum, and the Merenid Tombs are a sanctuary of peace in the bustling urban area. Fez hotels, from budget through mid-range to luxury, abound here and include many riad set in traditional Moroccan heritage buildings. Close by is the fantastic ruined Roman town of Volubilis, with stunning mosaics and towering columns. Visit our Fez Travel Guide
