The bohemian beach town of Essaouira was once a haven for hippies and famous 1960s musicians. Today, tourists from all backgrounds and countries still flock to this charming and relaxed fishing port. In addition to conventional Essaouira Beach hotels, visitors may also stay in one of the traditional riads in the town's whitewashed and blue shuttered homes. Many seaside accommodations also have their own sheltered swimming pools. Many visitors also enjoy walking or jogging along the boardwalk of this sandy and broad beach, but visitors may also relax on the main square with cups of hot mint tea. Fishermen still haul in their daily catches at the port and the narrow streets of the picturesque medina are free of motorised vehicles. Each June, this normally quiet community comes alive during its annual world music festival which showcases traditional Gnaoua musicians.
