El Jadida may be Morocco's most European-looking seaside community, thanks to over two-and-a-half centuries of Portuguese rule. Nowadays, most guests at El Jadida Beach hotels are summer tourists from other parts of Morocco, but growing numbers of foreign visitors are also discovering this picturesque town situated 100kms northeast of Casablanca. The main beach strip stretches well past the town's boundaries, but its waters can become polluted from the ships which dock in the nearby port. Nearby, a cleaner and less crowded beach, Phare Sidi Ouafi, boasts several makeshift seaside cafés and is especially popular among Moroccan families. The more developed Sidi Bouzid Beach lies two kilometres southwest of Phare Sidi Ouafi and features some trendy restaurants and villas. The nightlife in this small town, formerly known as Mazagan, ranks among the liveliest in all of Morocco and the parties along the promenade often last into the early hours.
