Introduction to Dakhla, Morocco
On a narrow peninsula off the Atlantic coast of the Western Sahara lies the port city of Dakhla (Ad Dakhla). Originally settled by the Spanish in 1476 as Villa Cisneros, the city was stop on a trade route on the Rio De Oro, or 'River of Gold'. Dakhla Airport has daily flights from Casablanca and regular flights from Las Palmas, the largest city of the Canary Islands. It is also possible to get to Dakhla by bus from Marrakesh and Agadir. Attractions include an old Spanish church and a historic fortress, and there is plenty to do, particularly in the way of aquatic sports. The waters of the western sea and the eastern lagoon are perfect for surf casting, quad diving, windsurfing and kite-surfing. Camel riding and bird watching are novel pastimes enjoyed by tourists here, and the local seafood is not to be missed. Dakhla hotels can arrange anything from a jeep safari into the desert to a day at a spa. It is possible to make the trek across the desert to Mauritania, but visas must be obtained beforehand in Rabat. Dakhla is the ultimate place to unwind for a quiet, relaxing holiday.other spellings: dakhlahotels, dakla hote, darkhla hotell, takhla hotle, otel in dskhla, dahkla hotles
