Introduction to Casablanca, Morocco
Romanticised by Hollywood in the vintage film of the same name, present-day Casablanca is Morocco's economic and industrial heartland. The spectacular King Hassan II Mosque, the small medieval walled Old Medina, the ocean-side Corniche with its Casablanca hotels and nightclubs and the admittedly beautiful Hispano-Moorish Mahkama du Pacha offer up a taste of old Morocco. The huge mosque, the third-largest on the planet, with its beautiful interior, water features and glorious traditional-tiled decorations, is a must-visit. The Old Medina is charming, with its many little Moroccan handicraft shops aimed at tourists. The town's extensive souk is a challenge, with miniscule alleyways and stall owners expert in bargaining. The Mahkama du Pach is a must-see; its 60 ornate rooms have intricate tiled floors, fabulous carved and fretted ceilings, and lacework-fine wrought iron railings. Visit our Casablanca Travel Guide
