Introduction to Berkane, Morocco
Berkane is a city located in the extreme northeastern reaches of Morocco, in the region of Thrifa, a mere stone's throw from the warm Mediterranean Sea. This city has a population of 80,000 people and is known to be Morocco's capital of citrus fruit farming. The city has also gained international fame for being the birthplace of one of the world's greatest marathon runners (of all time), Hicham El Guerrouj. Local attractions include the Palacio de la Asamblea, Plaza de Armas and the Puerta de la Marina. While the name of the city might translate to 'black' in the local Berber dialect, Berkane is anything but a dark place. In fact, the city's sunny climate has made it is popular with tourists who use the hotels in Berkane as a base for their northerly pilgrimage to Oujda. This is one of the largest cities in this part of the country, which also provides access to southern Spain.
