Sitting at the starting point of the Atlas Mountains, Beni Mellal in Morocco sees hot summers and cool winters. As capital of the Tadla-Azilal region, this central Moroccan city has a hefty population of 160,000-plus. Overlooking the city is the 2,247m Mount Tassemit. The city has much history for the visitor to explore, from the remains of its late 17th century walls to the Kasba Bel-Kush. Yet despite its long-running history, the city is quite modern. For an authentic Moroccan shopping experience, visitors can head for the city's main market, where locally grown olives, oranges and figs are widely available. Access to the city is via Casablanca or Fez by national road, or from the former by railway. Taxis are available for trips around the city. The city is not a major tourist destination yet there are comfortable hotels in Beni Mellal to accommodate visitors. From the city, excursions to the Cascades d'Ouzoud waterfalls are possible.
