Introduction to Azilal, Morocco
Azilal is nestled in a secluded valley of the Western High Atlas Mountains, in central Morocco. This is the oldest section of the Atlas range, made up of mostly Jurassic and Cretaceous formations such as the Imi-n-Ifri, where famous dinosaur footprints can be seen. The town is next to Western High Atlas National Park and not far from Zaida National Park, the mountains of which are easy to traverse and make for a memorable holiday filled with adventure. Azilal hotels put visitors close to the wondrous Ouzoud Falls, a four-tiered waterfall that seems to magically pour out of a deep gorge from a broad waterless valley. Swimming is possible in the falls' pools, which are surrounded by orchards of fruit and olive trees and home to troops of monkeys. The falls are close to the Ait Bougmez trails that lead up to the Mgoun massif, the third-highest peak in the country. From Azilal, it is easy to reach Beni Mellal to continue touring the oldest portion of the Atlas.
