Way out of the centre of bustling Mexico City, Xochimilco was once a separate entity to its much larger cousin further north and as such, it has an identity all of its own that should not be missed. It's a borough of canals that serves as a historic reminder of the lake that once existed before Mexico City swamped the entire area. Boat rides up and down these idyllic water channels serve as the best way to see the area, especially given the colourful markings and traditional Spanish names adorned on many of these vessels.
