Introduction to Mexico City - Azcapotzalco
Azcapotzalco is one of the 16 boroughs which make up Mexico City. Located in the far north of the city, it was once a town in its own right, before being absorbed by the growing capital. The borough is of particular interest to historical enthusiasts; it was once a cultural centre in pre-Colombian times. There is also some interesting architecture in the Spanish colonial style. Much of this architecture has been well-preserved and is still in use to this day. Probably the best example of this is the Church of St James and St Philip, as well as its neighbouring monastery. In the early 1920s, a large number of Italian immigrants moved to Azcapotzalco. Nowadays, residents are still proud of their Italian heritage, offering visitors the chance to visit Italian bakeries and restaurants in the borough. In addition, Azcapotzalco hotels also offer easy access to neighbouring Cuidad Satellite, home to two of the city's biggest shopping centres. Bars and restaurants also tend to be cheaper here than in more central areas. Visit our Mexico City Travel Guide
