Introduction to Mexicali, Mexico
Mexicali is the capital city of the Mexican region of Baja California Norte. As such it enjoys very close proximity to the border with the United States and the name, Mexicali, combines the start of the place names of Mexico and California. Mexicali hotels do a brisk trade from visiting relatives of locals since the city is easily one of the most ethnically diverse and multi-cultural urban areas in all of Mexico. There are 11 theatres in Mexicali making it a very culturally rich city, possibly the most vibrant arts centre outside of Mexico City. Theatres include the State Theatre, the CREA Theatre and the Theatre of OXXO. Hotels in Mexicali are more often than not completely booked out during periods when music festivals such as Baja Prog are held.
