Located in the south-central area of Mexico, Cocoyoc is a small city surrounded by historical sites dating back to the time of the Aztecs.

The main ruins dating back to this period lie just 10 minutes by car outside the city centre at Tluihuica and feature a 15-metre high pyramid and a pool where the emperor used to bathe.

Another even nearer site at Pantitlan is home to more than 10 pyramids, but is still being studied.

There are also a host of Spanish colonial buildings close to Cocoyoc, including Oaxtepec, just two miles away and where the first hospital was constructed in the Americas.

Also nearby are a number of old Spanish convents and chapels, many featuring artwork dating back hundreds of years.

Cocoyoc hotels are in short supply in the city centre although there are a number of high-end resorts nearby as well as choices on the road to Pena Flores.
