Introduction to Chiapas, Mexico
Hugging the border of Guatamala, Chiapas is the most southern state in Mexico. Boasting several, moderately-sized cities, such as Tuxtla Gutierrez and San Cristobal de Las Casas, tourists have been kept away from this culturally rich area for just over a decade due to internal conflicts. Today, the region has seen an increase in tourism as the fighting has declined, attracting those tourists searching for an out-of-the-way cultural escape. Hotels in Chiapas are mostly found in the larger towns, and are generally cheap and basic, but comfortable. There are a wide variety of local Chiapas hotels, but almost no internationally recognised chains. However, local and family-run hotels in Chiapas always have an excellent assortment of tours and sightseeing options. This makes visiting the region’s landmarks remarkably easy, including the Blue Waterfalls near Palenque, the archaeological sites of the Ruta Maya trail, and the diverse beauty of Lacandon Jungle.Visit our Chiapas Travel Guide
