Introduction to Chiapas - Palenque
Palenque is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates back to the Mayan empire. It is located in what is now called the Mexican state of Chiapas and around 130kms south of the seaside resort of Ciudad del Carmen. Palenque hotels are few since this is a protected historical town and many visitors arrive here on day trips from Ciudad del Carmen. However, hotels in Palenque are diverse and welcoming and all the standard facilities and conveniences are found in and around town. The main draw card here in Palenque is the Palace, a very well preserved complex decorated with famed bas relief carvings that was reclaimed from the jungle foliage that took over the ruins before modern archaeologists re-discovered the site. Palenque hotels will offer guided tours to the Palace which houses the Temple of the Inscriptions and overlooks the stone pyramids and the Temples of the Cross.
