Introduction to Chiapas - Chiapa de Corzo
Nestled in the beautiful Grijalva river valley of the surrounding Chiapas Highlands, Chiapa de Corzo is a medium-sized town of great historical significance. It dates back to at least 1400 BC and is the site of the first city the Spanish founded in Chiapas. It is located roughly 15kms east of Tuxtla Gutierrez, the state capital, and has a population in the region of 75,000 people. The main landmark, and one of the region's most striking colonial structures, is La Pila, a fountain which rises dramatically from a large central plaza. The impressive building surrounding the fountain was constructed in 1562 and features classic Gothic and Mudejar architecture, and a number of beautiful arches. Also not to be missed is the enormous Dominican church and convent, which features a museum and a gallery. The town has plenty of accommodation options, with many Chiapa de Corzo hotels located in the town centre or by the riverside. Visitors to the town in January can enjoy the vibrant and eclectic town festival, which attracts thousands of people from all over the region and beyond each year.Visit our Chiapas Travel Guide
