Introduction to Campeche - Champoton
Located around 60kms south of Campeche, on the beautiful Gulf of Mexico, Champoton is a fishing town of roughly 27,000 inhabitants. The town has historical significance, being a Mayan civilisation which dates back to the 10th century and the site of a key 16th century battle between Mayan and Spanish troops, with the Mayans the victors. There is a pretty beach which looks out onto the gulf. This area of town is where most the fresh seafood restaurants (coctelerias) and other eateries can be found as well as other cafes and bars. Accommodation such as Champoton hotels are also located by the beach. Champoton is not noted for its tourism but the Caves of Monte Bravo, around 50kms out of town, feature some interesting rock formations and are well worth checking out. The popular tourist resort of Ciudad del Carman is less than 2 hours' drive away, while the nearest airport is in Campeche.other spellings: champotonhotels, champoton otel, campoton hotell, champroton hote
