Introduction to Acapulco - Golden Zone
The legendary Mexican beach resort of Acapulco is divided into five zones, with Golden Zone the original tourism hub which made the town famous with generations of US visitors. Nowadays, it's been overtaken by the upscale Diamond Zone, but still has over 40 Golden Zone hotels on its beachfront and a great many restaurants and nightlife venues as well as its pretty, albeit crowded, beaches. Its western boundary with the Traditional Zone is where locals meet to enjoy fresh seafood from the ramshackle eateries along the shore - an enjoyable slice of Acapulco life. The beach road in the Golden Zone is crammed with malls, shops, fast-food outlets, nightclubs and entertainment venues, and is a lively, noisy area. Although few Acapulco tourists venture away from the Golden Zone, characterful Old Acapulco in the Traditional Zone is a fascinating place for a stroll, with the city's magnificent Byzantine-style cathedral leading the historic attractions here.
