The Grand Port district of Mauritius covers most of the southeast quarter of the island. The district's Plaine Magnien town is adjacent to the only public airport on Mauritius. Principal towns are Mahebourg, Rose Belle and the original Dutch landing location known as the Old Grand Port. This location boasts a beautiful coastline complete with sandy beaches and warm turquoise seas, while the inland terrain varies from forested mountains to tea plantations. Grand Port hotels and resorts are spread all over the district with a central cluster beside the beach at Blue Bay. The sands here are shaded by a beautiful Filao Casuarina trees. In addition to swimming and snorkelling, Blue Bay offers windsurfing, boating and even the opportunity to watch the dolphins playing offshore. Nearby tourist attractions include the landmark 600 metre Le Morne rock formation and the Black Georges National Park. The capital city, Port Louis, is located a little farther out, but is a worthwhile trip with its charming Chinatown, traditional bazaar, museums and old British citadel.
