Saint George’s Bay Travel Guide
Madaliena Tower: designed to protect the nearby coastline of Bahar ic-Caqhag, this striking tower built in the middle of the 17th century sits on a picturesque spot overlooking the Mediterranean. The British occupied the tower in the 19th century as part of their defence plans.
Harq Hamiem Valley: featuring more than 400 plant species, this small valley makes the ideal route for those making the short trip from St George’s Bay to Pembroke on foot. The valley also features a cave with a striking fresh water cavern.
Fort Pembroke and Battery: although mostly destroyed by development – the fort is now a school – both sites are being restored and there are plans to build a museum very soon on the site of the battery, which dates back to 1899.
Fort Manoel: situated south of St Julian’s and north of Valletta, 250-year-old Fort Manoel on the island of the same name makes a pleasant trip from St George’s. Getting here requires a walk of about one hour that takes in many of the coastal roads. Manoel island is joined to the mainland by a bridge.
