Splendid Baroque churches and Neolithic temple remains combine with the charm of quaint old fashioned town centres and stunning Mediterranean views to present a destination that few who visit are not enchanted by. With the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino comprising the most significant and developed in the archipelago, holiday makers have plenty of tourist-friendly destinations to choose from. Valletta is the capital and is based on the island of Malta. This historically rich city is home to the Cathedral of St John, which for many is the highlight of the attractions list. Inside this magnificent structure is an ornate vaulted central nave featuring frescos of Mattia Preti. Caravaggio’s painting of the execution of John the Baptist is also highly worthy of mention. Elsewhere in the city, visitors will find some fascinating museums such as the National Museum of Archaeology and the National War Museum. Malta is easily accessed with both air and sea options available. From mainland Europe, a large number of cities maintain air connections with the Malta International Airport which is situated about 5kms southwest of the capital Valletta. During the summer season, ferry connections are operated between Malta and Sicily and Genoa in Italy. Once on the main island, public buses provide a cheap and relatively efficient means of getting around. Taxis are also available, as are hire cars; the latter option giving significant freedom to explore the island’s more obscure regions. |
