Introduction to Naxxar, Malta
The small Maltese town of Naxxar lies in the north-central region of the island and is home to just over 13,000 inhabitants. Bronze Age remnants and cave art in the area evidence the long habitation in this part of the island, with cart-ruts that are thousands of years old and Punic tombs as well as catacombs in and around the little town. A legend suggests St Paul was shipwrecked here and helped by the villagers, who took this duty seriously knowing the seas around the island to be treacherous. Many visitors staying in Naxxar hotels take time to explore the ancient churches around the town. In the 16th century, there were no less than 36 churches here, with the structure nowadays used as the parish church built in 1616 to serve 1,200 inhabitants. The most-visited of the remaining churches are Il-Festa tan-Naxar, for its beautiful cast bronze doors and carved image of the Virgin Mary, and Knisja tan-Naxar, for its religious artworks depicting the birth of Christ and its 16th century oil on wood of Our Lady of the Rosary. other spellings: naxarhotels, otelin maxar, naxxra hotell, naxaxr hote, naxxar hotes, nxaxar
