Introduction to Comino, Malta
The island of Comino is the second-largest in the Maltese Mediterranean archipelago, located to the north of Malta, with Gozo to its north. Named for the cumin seed it used to produce, it is a tranquil and isolated place with only four permanent residents and measures just 3.5 square kilometres. The entire island is a nature reserve and bird sanctuary, attracting a number of ecotourists each summer. Its topography is rugged, with steep cliffs, caves and coves made famous as retreats for pirates, and the island once used for hunting wild boar by the Knights of Malta. By the 17th century, the island was mostly uninhabited, used primarily as a prison for unruly knights. The 17th century St Mary's Tower, set in the island's centre, was intended as a defence against pirates, and served as a prison in the early 19th century. An ancient chapel and a small defensive battery on the coast are the only remnants of olden times here. Comino hotels are represented by a 1960s-built resort and a few rental holiday cottages. other spellings: commino otel, comnino hotell, camino hote, comeno hotles, comino hotle, komino
