By plane: this is the best way to travel if you want to save time or do not enjoy sea travel. There are daily flights from Kuala Lumpur by Pelangi Air and Berjaya Air. There are also daily flights from Singapore. Flight time from Kuala Lumpur is approximately 40 minutes and from Singapore approximately 60 minutes.
By road: it is possible to drive to the Mersing or Tanjung Gemak jetties in Malaysia from Singapore and from within Malaysia. The jetties provide both long and short term parking facilities. Travellers can then hop on to a boat or a ferry to reach Tioman Island. It takes about six hours to drive from Kuala Lumpur to Mersing - a distance of about 400 kilometres.
Speed ferries leave Tanjung Gemak jetty at 11.30 and 14.00 hours and carry about 150 passengers per trip. The air conditioned ferries take about 2.5 hours to reach Tioman Island. The ferries do not usually run on schedule because of lack of passengers or changes in tides.
A catamaran leaves Singapore’s Finger Pier once every day except on Wednesdays and takes about 4.5 hours to reach Tioman Island. Beware of touts who claim that there are hourly services and sell you tickets for the next hour.
