Penang Travel Guide - Getting There
Once on the island, public transportation is the best means of getting around to avoid the stress of driving. Taxis are easily hailed and most buses are air conditioned.
By air: Penang’s Bayan Lepas International Airport is located about 20kms south of the city. There are more than 20 daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Penang with flying time of approximately one hour.
By road/bus: drivers can use the excellent North-South Highway to drive to Penang. There is a toll for this highway, but the wide, well-surfaced roads and the time saved are well worth the small fee. A drive from Kuala Lumpur to Penang takes approximately 4 hours.
By ferry: butterworth jetty is the other major gateway into Penang. Here, you can take the short ferry ride across the water in either a car or passenger ferry. It is possible to take the train to Butterworth from many destinations before crossing the water.
