Penang Travel Guide - Activities
The beaches: that are commonly frequented by tourists are at Teluk Bahang and Batu Ferringhi, neither too far away from the city. The beaches get quite crowded during the weekends, but during the week are fairly quiet and peaceful. The beaches are beautiful but the water is slightly polluted because of the development taking place on the island.
Water sports: are plentiful on Penang. Jet skiing, water skiing, motorised paragliding, sailing, fishing and snorkelling can all be enjoyed at very competitive rates.
Jalan Pinang is the best street for shopping in Penang as the stores sell a wide range of items including jewellery, souvenir items, handicrafts, clothes, fabrics, electronic goods and many other items.
Markets: are another great way to mingle with the locals. The best market for purchasing items is Thieves’ Market on Lorong Kulit. The market sells all sorts of delights ranging from antique pieces to souvenir items and batek paintings. The main beach areas have stalls which are opened at night to attract tourists. The night market at Batu Ferringhi is worth a trip to pick up a bargain or two.
Hawker food: almost all Penangites live to eat and as a result, hawker food is a booming business here. Visitors should try the hawker centre at Gurney Drive, near the Esplanade. Here you will find more than 30 different stalls selling Chinese, Indian and Malay food. Some stalls even sell Western food including lamb and chicken chops with fries.
