Attractions in Pangkor
Pangkor Island actually consists of nine islands but it is only the two largest that are inhabited. Beautiful palm fringed beaches with powder soft sand, stunning coves and quaint fishing villages all give the island its famed nickname of ‘Paradise Island.’
The ‘Island’ is well loved by all who visit it because of its idyllic nature that cocoons the traveller allowing them to totally relax on this peaceful, friendly island. The stunning beaches are the main draw to the island but there are also many places of interest to visits and lots of activities to keep the more adventurous tourist occupied.
The National Museum took over the site some years ago and has built a square and placed a cannon that was originally used by the Dutch in the square. There are also some literature and exhibits available. However, only the foundation and a stone on which soldiers have etched their names remains of the old fort.
Batu Bersurat (The Stone of Inscriptions): is a large granite boulder that does not look like much at all. However, on closer inspection visitors will notice that the boulder has been inscribed with the words ‘1743 CRALO,’ ‘VOC.’ and the image of a tiger. ‘VOC’ is the Dutch acronym for the Dutch East India Company.
Kali Amman Temple: is the largest Indian temple on Pangkor Island. Kali is often thought to be a god of destruction but in Hindu mythology she is the benevolent mother goddess. The temple is very auspicious because the shrine of Kali faces the sea. There is only one other Hindu temple in Malaysia that faces the sea and this is located in Penang. The temple has steps leading directly down to the sea making it very unusual and unique.
Foo Lin Kong Temple: is a Taoist temple that has been built at the bottom of Pangkor Hill in Sungai Pinang Besar village. Visitors here can see a miniature version of the Great Wall of China and walk through the peaceful temple gardens.
Visitors to the village may be overcome by the strong smells of drying fish lying in rattan baskets all along the village or the smell of freshly caught fish. But once the ‘fishy’ smell has been overcome there is so much to see from wooden huts built on stilts, fishermen tending to their boats or mending their nets, young children helping their parents dry out the catch and many other interesting sights.
