Genting Highlands: not far from KL, the Genting Highlands, or the ‘City of Entertainment,’ features bright lights, huge hotels and a casino and is KL’s answer to Las Vegas. There are four hotels, the pick of the bunch being the Genting Hotel, which is directly connected to the casino. Hotel rates vary on the season and day of the week and the 24-hour casino also charges a refundable deposit.
There are many other attractions in the area if you’re on a losing streak or don’t fancy the roulette tables. The Genting Theme Park features rides and fast food joints and is ideal for the kids, while Awana Golf and Country Club is a quality golf course in the hills.
Egg boiling and picnics are very popular among the masses, or you may prefer a more secluded day in one of the Family Baths. These baths have a dipping pool, able to fit six to eight people, and showers, all of which is fenced off.
Kuala Selangor Fireflies: located about a one-hour’ drive to the northwest of Kuala Lumpur near Kuala Selangor, river trips are available that take visitors among the mangroves. Known locally as kelip-kelip, the fire flies light up mangrove trees with their synchronised flashing - an awesome sight for those who have never seen them in action. Fine restaurants and a monkey park in Kuala Selangor are also provided.
Taman Negara National Park: if you have extra time, Taman Negara National Park, Malaysia's best and most loved, is ancient and boasts primary rainforest and peninsular Malaysia's highest mountain; Gunung Tahan - over 2,000m above sea level.
The park is extremely well preserved and contains an array of flora and fauna. Rare orchids and lush vegetation abound, while over 200 bird species, barking deer, tigers, leopards, elephants, and various monkeys and rhinos may also be seen if you’re lucky. Outdoor activities and jungle walks are also available here.
