Introduction to Taiping, Malaysia
Taiping, a popular tourist town in the Malaysian state of Perak, was made wealthy by a once-burgeoning regional tin-mining industry. Today, the town boasts an architectural heritage, a local history and a fascinating cultural mix that attract people from across the region. Getting here is made easy by the combination of rail and road links that connect it to several big cities. The E1, known as the North-South Expressway, runs to the west of the town, putting Penang, Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur within easy reach. For flights, the best option is Penang, about an hour's drive to the north. The main railway station is only a few minutes from hotels in Taiping. The popular zoo and night safari centre sits on the town's eastern fringes. Taiping Lake Gardens offers a pleasant place to enjoy walks, lots of greenery and impressive rain trees that are more than 100 years old.
