Introduction to Sabah, Malaysia
On the island part of Malaysia that it shares with Borneo lies the state of Sabah, one of Malaysia’s largest regions. Sabah has vast areas of coastline and is bordered by Indonesia to the south and the Malaysian state of Sarawak. Many who visit the state enjoy the coastal areas and national parks. It is a particularly popular area for eco-tourism. The most luxurious hotels in Sabah are in Kota Kinabalu, the state capital on the northern coast, but some of the beaches also host relaxing resorts and cosy guesthouses. Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in Malaysia, is here and part of a vast park that features trekking, rafting and camping. Just offshore are some of the finest tropical islands in the world, many of which have been protected by the government. Turtle Islands Park is a conservatory for endangered sea turtles, while Sipadan Park and Tunku Abdul Rahman Park are known for their stunning coral reef systems.
