Introduction to Penang - Butterworth
A major transit route from Thailand to the north and Penang Island to the west, Penang's Butterworth is a mostly industrial town with a handful of attractions worth visiting before catching the next train or bus out. The Bird Park is the largest of its kind in the country, with a kaleidoscope of species that will thrill children. Visitors can feed the birds and stand inside a huge aviary. The Temple of the Ninth Emperor God is among the most stunning Chinese temples in the wider region. Although it only dates back to 2000, it took about 50 specialists from the Chinese mainland to build it and the care and level of attention shows. Butterworth is superbly located in terms of travel around the region given that it has direct train connections to Bangkok, George Town, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
