Introduction to Pasir Mas, Malaysia
Located in the extreme northeast of Malaysia, Pasir Mas is just a few kilometres from the border with Thailand. The town is roughly halfway between the busy city of Kota Bharu and the Thai border town of Sungai Kolok, and sits on the Kelantan River, which shares its name with the state. The town is popular with travellers making their way by road between Malaysia's 'Jungle Railway' and connecting services across the border in Thailand. The so-called Jungle Railway offers services to Tumpat, a few miles to the north, and south all the way to Singapore, and is one of the world's great scenic railway lines. Hotels in Pasir Mas are ideal for taking a break from long-distance journeys or waiting to catch a morning train. The trip to the railway station in Sungai Kolok takes only 30 minutes. Pasir Mas is home to Malaysia's first school of homeopathy. Wat Uttamaram temple, a few kilometres west of town, is particularly stunning.
