Introduction to Miri - Airport
Miri International Airport, informally known as just Miri Airport, may have only been in operation since 2005, but it has already become the busiest domestic airport in the nation of Malaysia. The airport lies south of the city of Miri on the island of Borneo, not far from the Brunei Darussalam border, and is the closest airport to this tiny Southeast Asian nation. The even tinier nation of Singapore became the airport's only direct destination outside of Malaysia in 2009. Over one-and-a-half million passengers used Miri International Airport in 2008, making the airport Malaysia's third busiest. The airport terminal's maximum capacity is two million passengers. Many Miri Airport hotels and travel agents pick up their guests directly from the airport before venturing into the city of Miri, but many passengers also change planes at the airport to head for more isolated destinations, such as the Kelabit Highlands and the national park of Gunung Mulu. Ever since 1910, the year in which the first oil well in Malaysia was drilled near the city, petroleum has been the biggest industry here.other spellings: mirihotels airport, mirih otel airport, miri hotell, meri hote, miiri hotles airport, hotes mire
