Introduction to Melaka, Malaysia
Melaka, also written as Malacca, is a city on the southwestern end of the Malay Peninsula. A historic and vibrant port city, Malacca still has many buildings left behind by European colonial traders, such as the Tan Beng Swee clock tower and Stadhuys. Most of these buildings can be seen in the historic quarter of the city, which is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. The banks of the Melaka River, which runs through the city, are in parts nice places to stroll. The bulk of Melaka hotels are located around Kampung Tiga and Kampung Bukit China. There are two forts that were built by the British and Portuguese respectively that are worth visiting; Fort Famosa and St John's Fort. Other attractions are religious in nature and include St Peter's Church, Cheng Hoon Teng Temple and Kampong Kling's Mosque. Shopping can be fun in Melaka at the many markets, shop houses or antique stores. However, buyers should beware when buying antiques, as many pieces are simply made to look aged.
