Introduction to Kota Kinabalu - Ranau
Ranau refers to both the district and the town in Borneo's Sabah State. Located just to the east of Kota Kinabalu, this sizable town is populated mainly by ethnic Dusun people, giving it a unique and interesting atmosphere. The topography in and around Ranau is typical hilly highland terrain with an elevation of 1,176m that helps keep conditions cooler than in Kota Kinabalu proper. Some of Borneo's best attractions are in the area, including Poring Hot Springs, Mount Kinabalu and the Sabah Tea Garden. Also nearby is Kinabalu National Park, Malaysia's first UNESCO site. The town itself is primarily a transport hub and a centre for government offices. A decent selection of traveller amenities can be found in town, but most tourists stay out near Kinabalu National Park, where the majority of Ranau hotels are located. This lovely valley is one of the premier travel destinations in Sabah, offering visitors plenty of exotic culture to match the outstanding nature. Visit our Kota Kinabalu Travel Guide
