Introduction to Kapas Island, Malaysia

The beautiful island of Kapas sits in the South China Sea, about five kilometres from the coast of Terengganu in Peninsular Malaysia. The island's soft white beaches lend it its name, which is Bahasa Malay for 'cotton'. In addition to the beautiful beaches, which are set amid glorious tropical vegetation, Pulau Kapas features crystal-clear blue seas, abundant marine life, caves full of swallows' nests and little else to spoil a relaxing holiday in the tropics. Hotels in Kapas Island range from cheap open-air bungalows to luxury resorts featuring five-star air-conditioned accommodation. The island is known as a snorkelling paradise thanks to the many fish, marine turtles and other undersea animals. Shallow reefs along the island's western shores are particularly popular. Divers will enjoy the chance to dive on a wreck from WWII. Fishing, kayaking, windsurfing and boating are all both popular and very enjoyable around the island. Getting to the island involves a 15-minute boat journey from the town of Marang. The closest airport, Sultan Mahmud Airport, is about 50kms away.
