William Cameron ‘discovered’ the highlands in 1885 while on a mapping expedition but it was only many years later that the first pioneers arrived to settle down in this lovely cool plateau. The British, during the colonial era, initially used Cameron Highlands as a refuge from the stifling tropical heat in the lowlands. Later the British military set up base here to fight the communists in the area.
