Attractions in Luxembourg City
Domaine Thermal: is actually located just outside the city, and is the most well-known resort and spa in the country. It is situated between the Lorraine Hills, to its west, and the country’s forests and vineyards, to its east. The highlights of this impressive facility include fitness and health centres, recreational amenities and thermal baths. From time-to-time, the health centre’s orchestra offers concerts as well.
Echternach: is a medieval town, complete with the traditional market square and cobbled streets and is one of the most popular spots in the southern part of Luxembourg. The town features a mixture of medieval and Gothic styles, with the majority of its buildings on the banks of the Sure River, which runs through the middle of the town.
Notre Dame Cathedral: this impressive Gothic cathedral was built in the period of 1613-1621 and contains the sarcophagus of John the Blind and the royal family vault. The royal treasury can also be seen if you ask the sacristan to show it to you.
Just after Easter each year, the ceremony of the Octave of Our Lady of Luxembourg takes place here and involves a procession, during which thousands of pilgrims converge on the cathedral. During the procession, the statue of the Virgin Mary is carried through the streets of the city.
Parc Merveilleux: is a great place for families travelling with children to take a break from the city’s historical sites and museums. This well-known amusement park has a children’s playground, a train and also a small zoo.
Place d’Armes: is at the heart of the Old Town, and is among the city’s most inviting spots. This lively square is decked with coloured lights that create a festive atmosphere at night and sidewalk cafes and street vendors that draw locals and visitors during the day.
The Fortifications: the city grew around the 10th-century castle of Count Sigefroi on the Bock promontory at Montee de Clausen. The choice of location for the castle turned out to be quite significant as the 156-foot cliffs were considerable obstacles to invading forces and the cliff-top position permitted advance warning of any invader coming in along the Petrusse and Alzette river valleys.
Over time, the city developed a series of three rings of fortification, which included the cliffs, 15 forts, and an exterior wall incorporating nine additional forts. To complement the above-ground fortification, approximately 15 miles of underground tunnels were dug, for the purpose of sheltering thousands of troops and their equipment. Local legend has it that a lovely maiden, by the name Melusine, lives inside the rocky fortification, and controls the fate of Luxembourg with her knitting needles.
