Things to do in Luxembourg
Luxembourg City - view Luxembourg fortress
The first permanent fortress in Luxemburg was completed around 936, although little of the original building remains today. What can be seen are the remains of a stone tower, as well as the ancient belfry, the views from these are spectacular. Also within the grounds of the old fortress is a museum that details the history of the city, plus it is the entrance to the man made underground tunnels known as the “Casemates”.Luxembourg City - explore the Grand Ducal Palace
From the outside, the Grand Ducal Palace is a lovely looking building, made from limestone and marble, but it is the interiors that are the most beautiful and impressive. Although badly damaged during World War 2, the interiors have been restored to their former glory. Rooms are filled with gold and guilt, and there are paintings all over the building and the ceilings, as well as antique furniture. This grand property is still the residence of the governor. Tours are available, during the summer month period.Introduction to Luxembourg
Landlocked Luxembourg is one of Europe's smallest, yet most affluent countries, and is home to a capital city of the same name.Although it isn't one of the highest-profile destinations in Europe, many visitors are pleasantly surprised by what is a laid-back and charming country.
It is home to some excellent restaurants, many of which have been rated with a Michelin star.
Cheap food is available in the form of pizza thanks to the large Italian population that has migrated here.
Luxury shoppers should head to the Old Town, where expensive shops are housed in some of the city's oldest buildings.
This is a good area to eat and drink at night, while English-themed pubs can be found in other parts of the city.
Summer visitors can see the Grand Ducal Palace, home to Luxembourg's Grand Duke and offering guided tours during July and August.
At other times, Neumunster Abbey and the Cathedral of Notre Dame are among several fascinating churches in the city.
Luxembourg hotels can be expensive and fill up quickly in the summer, so visitors should book well ahead.
