Surrounded on three sides by the Luxembourg-French border, the town of Esch sur Alzette is one of the largest in the tiny principality, home to around 30,000 residents. Set in the lovely Alzette River valley, on the banks of the river, Esch, as it is locally known, makes a good base for touring the region and is only 15kms from Luxembourg City itself. One of the most interesting attractions here is the National Museum of the Resistance, documenting the brave nationals who fought against the German occupation during WWII. The town is a mix of heritage buildings, industrial areas and green spaces, with Esch sur Alzette hotels catering for both business travellers to the steel manufacturing companies and leisure visitors who come to explore this unique little European country. The road and rail systems in Luxembourg are excellent, with Esch one of the country's few towns to feature three railways stations.
