Literally translating into 'The Place on the Hills', the community of Antakalnis is one of the oldest and most scenic of the suburbs of Vilnius. This is the home of one of Lithuania's most spectacular examples of Baroque architecture, the Church of St Peter and St Paul. Another must-see highlight is Sapieha Palace, a lovely place surrounded by the finest Baroque park in the city where visitors can get a full dose of culture and nature in one go. History buffs may find the Antakalnis Cemetery worth a look, as it honours the victims of the 1991 January Events. The Neris River runs along the edge of the suburb, with two fantastic river beach areas in the Valakampiai neighbourhood.
