Introduction to Tyre, Lebanon

The bustling city of Tyre is known for its immaculate beaches and architecturally stunning Roman ruins. Sitting on a peninsula in southern Lebanon, several hours' drive from Beirut, this beautiful holiday destination is somewhere many tourists fail to reach. The large Hippodrome, the well-preserved Necropolis and the fully intact aqueduct and monumental arch are highlights at Al Bass archaeological site, the only attraction in town that is not within walking distance of most Tyre hotels. Discover hidden shops in the narrow old streets of the Christian district, where tourists can also explore the souk, a lively marketplace selling everything from precious souvenirs to delicious local cuisine. More ancient architecture can be found at the hot spring ruins, and nearby Al Gamal is a rocky beach that hosts a number of excellent swimming spots and seafood restaurants. Night-time swimming is popular in the summer, as is renting a fishing boat to tour the coast and its reef-lined islands. The lighthouse at the top of the peninsula is Tyre's best spot for taking in the sunset over the Mediterranean Sea.
