Lebanon has been a transfer point for travelers for many millennia, and is filled with ancient ruins. Just outside of Beirut are the ruins at Baalbek, once called Heliopolis by the Romans, where there have been temples to the gods dating back to Phoenician times, over 5,000 years ago. Take a day or two to walk around the site, and marvel how these huge stones got here, some of which weigh over 1,200 tons.Byblos - stroll the atmospheric old city
There have been people living in the area around Byblos since Neolithic times, and there has been a permanent settlement here for over 8,000 years. There are still remnants of buildings going back over 2,000 years, and they make for a great day walking around and spotting the different cultures. The city of Jounieh is overlooked by the Basilica and the statue of Our Lady of Harissa, both of which are accessed by the Telepherique, a combination of fernicular cable car and suspended cable car. This beautiful country, once marred by a long civil war, is now back on the tourist map as a destination with lots to offer. Gorgeous landscapes are plentiful, with excellent treks through the gorges and mountains. The beaches at Chekka and Byblos have excellent water for swimming and snorkelling, while the resort town of Zahl is the best spot to get a taste of excellent Lebanese cuisine. Lebanon’s capital city of Beirut may not quite be the Paris of the Middle East as it was once known, but it remains a vibrant and sophisticated city. Situated 86km north of the capital is Tripoli, a sleek and modern city that also houses nearly 50 historical sites. Lebanon offers excellent skiing at its numerous resorts.Visit our Lebanon Travel Guide
