Introduction to Beirut - Achrafieh
One of the oldest and most charming areas of Beirut, Achrafieh is located in the east of downtown and is one of the city's main tourist districts. It features an abundance of restaurants, cafes and nightclubs, and a large number of upmarket apartment buildings. It is regarded as one of the finest places in the city for shopping. Visitors have a good selection of Achrafieh hotels to choose from and although staying in this area may be more expensive than staying in other parts of the city, the old-style charm makes it worth it for many. There are a number of tourist attractions in the area, with the Nicolas Sursock Museum being an interesting example of an 18th century Lebanese palace and the Escalier de Saint Nicolas being the longest staircase in the Middle East. Here, there are twice-yearly, open-air exhibitions which feature local and international work alike.
