Introduction to Bcharre, Lebanon
In northern Lebanon, the hilltop town of Bcharre (Bsharri) is filled with apple and walnut trees, snow-capped mountain landscapes and a rich cultural history. This small town is the birthplace of Khalil Gibran, the famous Lebanese painter, poet and sculptor. The former Monastery of Mar Sarkis now houses his tomb and a museum featuring many works of the artist and philosopher. Bcharre hotels are located near a number of tourist attractions, including two UNESCO World Heritage sites: Kadisha Valley, a deep gorge carved from the Kadisha River, and the Forest of the Cedars of God, home to some of the world's oldest trees. Perched atop the valley cliffs are many ancient monasteries, including the 14th century Mar Lichaa that towers over Bcharre. The fiery orange caps of the town church pierce the skyline and can be seen from anywhere in the valley, contributing to the town's majestic atmosphere. Bka'kafra is the birthplace of Saint Charbel, a Maronite Catholic monk and priest, and an important Christian pilgrimage site located nearby.
