Introduction to Riga - Outskirts
The city of Riga is the largest settlement in the Baltic region, and it stands as the capital of Latvia. More than 700,000 people live within the city, with most residing in the outskirts. Although the city boasts plenty of attractive sites in its central districts - some of which are UNESCO World Heritage listed - there are many wonderful landmarks worth visiting in the outer regions of the city. There are many Riga hotels in the outskirts for visitors to choose from. The Mezaparks region, otherwise known as Forest Park, is an extensive and remarkable forested area to the northeast of the centre that is a great place to visit. Inside this parkland is the city zoo, which although small provides plenty of fascinating exhibits for patrons to marvel at. The Moscow Suburb, locally known as Maskavas Forstate, is an area of interest in the southeastern outskirts of Riga. Some of the landmarks here include the Russian Orthodox Church and the Choral Great Synagogue.
