Things to do in Latvia
Jurmala - have fun in Livu Akvaparks, water amusement park
For a great family day out take a trip to the water amusement park at Livu Akvaparks in Jurmala. The park is divided into 2 sections with the indoor slides and rides open all year round and the outside area just during the summer months. There are also saunas and a bistro to make the trip to the park a whole day affair. A particular favourite of visitors to the park in the summer months is the Chupa Chups island where there are over 50 fountains to play in.
Liepaja - visit St. Trinity Church in Liepaja
From the outside the church of St Trinity in Leipaja is not of great beauty but it does hold significance to the people of Latvia as being the site where the Finnish Jaegars saw the creation of the country of Finland back in 1918. The church also posses one of the best organs found in a church in Europe with over 7,000 pipes helping to give its magnificent sound. Take a climb up the church tower for great views over the town
Riga - explore the Old Town of Riga
With its location right on the shores of the Black sea Riga has been an important trading point since the 12th century and its mixture of different architectural styles from different times and different regional influences make a trip around the old part of the town very enjoyable. There is so much to do in Riga it is difficult to know where to start but you must take time to see the Old Town and partake of the cuisine of the region in one of the many bars and restaurants that can be found there.
Riga - experience the Ligatne Nature trails
With more than 5km of trails and hundreds of native Latvian animals a walk along the Ligatne Nature trails is not only great fun but informative as well. There are numerous boarded walkways to help you find your way through the forests and to ensure your impact on the environment is kept to a minimum. Keep your eyes open and if you are very lucky you can see the elusive wild boar and even the occasional wolf but more common are elk and squirrels. There are guides available to make the time here more enjoyable and it takes about 2.5 hours to see the whole site.
Introduction to Latvia
Nestled between the former Soviet countries of Estonia and Lithuania, and facing the magnificent Baltic Sea, Latvia is continuing to experience an increase in tourism. Its warm coastal beaches, thriving cities, pristine rural landscapes, medieval regions and undisturbed natural forests provide an ideal haven popular amongst European, Scandinavian and Russian tourists. Hotels in Latvia differ depending on the destination, but most high end accommodation is found in the larger cities of Riga, Leipaja and Sigulda. Tourists searching for a summer holiday can easily find beach resort accommodations, particularly in cities like Jurmala. However, those tourists seeking a winter wonderland, then Latvia's Gauja Valley provides an unrivaled destination teeming with winter sport activities and a fascinating medieval atmosphere. Summer is the best season to visit the vicinity, as the northern location of the country can create bitterly cold winters with very short days. Therefore, the establishments are usually most expensive and at their busiest during this period. Visit our Latvia Travel Guide
